Iberdrola has received the green light to begin construction on El Escudo, a €120 million wind farm in Cantabria

The facility is set to have a capacity of 101 MW and will generate renewable energy equivalent to the annual consumption of 95,300 households. It will also prevent emissions of 45,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.

The project has had the Environmental Impact Statement since May 2021 and the Prior Administrative Authorisation since May 2022. The Regional Commission for Territorial and Urban Planning authorised the construction of the Escudo Wind Farm in October 2023.

The first wind farm to apply BIM technology

It is the first farm in Spain to apply BIM technology. The digital model is being developed by the Cantabrian company INGECID, linked to the Santander School of Civil Engineering.

Works will begin with the internal access roads, the foundations for the future power line, and the levelling of the land on which the substation that will collect the renewable energy produced by the wind will be built. Preliminary construction work has already begun.

€120 million has been invested in the project, and a significant part of the construction budget is committed to local companies.
