New Zealand has unveiled a plan to make the country a world leader in responsible AI across key sectors, including architecture, engineering and construction, by 2030
The AI Blueprint for Aotearoa New Zealand focuses on responsible AI innovation in six key sectors – agriculture, AEC, the creative industries, environment and health.
These sectors are not intended to be exclusive, but are crucial for Aotearoa’s long-term economic success and will benefit from greater AI adoption, the forum said.
Frameworks for each sector outline the activities for the next 12 months necessary to achieve their five-year goals.
Key objectives include building public trust and knowledge, active AI adoption, sustainable infrastructure, cultural integration and research and investment.
Responsible AI in the AEC sector
New Zealand’s AEC sector contributed over NZ$17.6bn to national GDP in September 2023, or around 6.3%.
Even a slight increase in productivity can funnel hundreds of millions of dollars into the economy, the forum said.
In addition, the sector will be instrumental in preparing national infrastructure for climate change, while enhancing resilience to extreme weather events and environmental shifts.
Planning ahead
By 2030, it is anticipated that AI will place a substantial role in the AEC sector’s research and development initiatives, with more than 40% of projects forecast to involve AI.
A dedicated AI Forum of New Zealand Working Group for the AEC sector will be established by May 2025.
Its key outcomes will be:
- AEC and AI business case: Publish a comprehensive white paper providing an overview and practical recommendations for AI integration in the AEC sector. This will serve as a roadmap for understanding the present capabilities and future potential of AI in this industry.
- Supporting the development of a National Digital Twin: Inform and facilitate the creation of an industry-led National Digital Twin, ensuring it is designed and developed to effectively harness AI technology safely.
- AI knowledge base: Establish a comprehensive knowledge base to standardise AI practices in AEC, highlighting benefits and successful case studies for government entities.
- Education and industry collaboration: Develop educational materials and training programs to accelerate AI adoption, fostering partnerships between tech providers, consultancy firms, contractors, government agencies, academia and communities.
